Kimekomi

Kimekomi is a Japanese art form where fabric pieces are tucked into a base.  In this class students will be creating 2-D Kimekomi art that combines the painterly quality of impressionism, with complex quilting. We will begin by drawing a ‘stained-glass’ style design on foam core. We cover basic cutting techniques for the foam, then cutting and tucking techniques for the fabric.

About Jenni Barry

Jenni Barry was raised in a small community of the South San Francisco Bay area before it became known as Silicon Valley.  She attended Sierra Nevada College where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting in 1995.  She moved to Boundary County in 2008.  Het interest in textiles began at Christmas time, 2010.  She noticed a foam ball ornament on the tree with little pieces of fabric tucked into it, giving the appearance of having been quilted.  It inspired her to create tow-dimensional art using this technique but in her own unique style.  She did not know it at the time, but this technique is called Kimekomi.  She has taught her version of Kimekomi at The New Moon Gallery in Spokane, to students at Naples Elementary, at Create in Newport, and in private classes.
