Visual Arts

paintA major component of POAC’s mission is to support quality visual artists.  We do this by providing POAC artist members with opportunities to show their work at eleven year-round galleries in Sandpoint, Ponderay, and Dover.

In addition, POAC organizes, sponsors, and promotes an annual ArtWalk that takes place in downtown Sandpoint during summer.  From the third week of June through the second week of September, more than 30 downtown businesses and galleries open their doors to artists of every medium.  Exhibiting artists receive tremendous exposure to both local residents and tourists visiting our area from around the world.

Pend Oreille Arts Council is excited to be part of the Cedar Street Bridge Community. Having our office on the Cedar Street Bridge has given us the opportunity to have evolving art displays which extends the energy of the Bridge to the 2nd floor, with a vibrant and eclectic collection of local artwork.

The Power House

Sandpoint Power House

When you come over the long bridge and enter Sandpoint the first large building you see on your right is the Power House. In the early 1900s, the plant furnished electrical power for Sandpoint and the immediate surrounding area. In later years after the mode of the transmission of electricity had changed, the old building was used as a place for storage. It has since been remodeled on the inside but the exterior retains much of its appearance of years gone by.
Today it houses various businesses and Ross Hall photos, as well as an evolving exhibit of  community artist’s artwork curated by POAC.

Sandpoint Center

As POAC’s largest gallery, covering all three floors of the Columbia Bank Atrium, this gallery is loved by many of our artists for its flattering lighting, spacious museum-like atmosphere, and opening night receptions artfully catered by Tango Cafe.  This space has been known to exhibit up to 175 pieces of art at a time, including Sandpoint’s largest paintings, sculptures, and quilts.  This gallery is perfect if you want to see a lot of art during a short visit to town. It is the new home to POAC’s Annual Student Show for Bonner and Boundary County high school students. Four exhibits, including ArtWalk, are shown here annually, each for three months.

CB Plaza

The Community Plaza gallery is POAC’s special exhibit gallery.  We are occasionally contacted by an artist or teacher who has participated in or organized an interesting artistic project and is seeking a venue in which to share it.  Directly across the street from Farmin Park, this space is in the heart of town and perfect for small and special shows.  If you are interested in using the Community Plaza gallery to showcase your special project, please share your idea with us using the contact form.  Please note that priority scheduling is given to POAC supporters, so become a supporter today!

Ancillary Galleries

POAC maintains gallery exhibits in eight additional “ancillary galleries” in Sandpoint, Ponderay, Dover, and Sagle.  These venues allow people who would not typically seek out arts experiences to experience art in the places that they frequent in daily life.  With varying hours and locations, these venues are often visited by local residents as well as tourists.  They provide excellent opportunities for artists with medium-to-large bodies of work to display solo shows.  Banner Bank, Monarch Mountain Coffee, both Mountain West Banks, and P1FCU are all on four months rotations.  Dover City Hall and Edwards Jones are rotated once a year.
