Beginning Drawing and Beginning Watercolor
Drawing from life gives form to our understanding of nature. Having a basic understanding of the tools and techniques of drawing helps us to appreciate the aesthetic nature of life. Adding watercolor painting further helps us understand why we see and interpret life as we do.
This class will explore the foundations of the craft of drawing and we’ll apply the basic skills of watercoloring to better inform student’s personal vision. In 1-1/2 hour classes, we will investigate the basic elements of drawing and explore water color techniques toward accomplishing student’s personal artistic appreciation.
Line Drawing and ‘Techniques’
Composition, Portrait and Landscape
Perspective, 1 and 2 Point Investigation
Line and Wash watercoloring basic skills
With a foundation of basic techniques, tools, and materials, students will inform their imagination, and discover their creativity with an appreciation for their art.
About Barry Burgess
Local artist, Barry Burgess, has taught drawing with the JDS Studio since 2021. A longtime member of POAC, he has exhibited works of watercolor, collage, painting, and 2-dimensional art in public and private venues throughout the Inland Northwest. His drawing acumen is informed of more than 25 years of architectural practice, but now retired, he maintains his studio of artworks in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Strathmore drawing paper”, 9” x 12”, in tablet form or similar
Watercolor paper, 140 lb., minimum 9” x 12”
A minimum of 12 transparent watercolors
Watercolor paintbrushes
Supply fee:
Pencils, pens, and charcoal drawing tools will be provided for a $10.00 supply fee. It will be due to the instructor on the first night of class. (Please bring cash.)
